About NetCEP

NetCEP builds a network of trusted people and places, strengthening community capability to respond to distress through connection, shared learning and support.

NetCEP - Creating compassionate and connected communities

The Network of Community Engagement Points (NetCEP) brings together trusted people and places who play a quiet but powerful role in community wellbeing. By creating opportunities for purposeful connection, shared learning and ongoing support, we help strengthen their capacity to create compassionate communities, where people feel heard, supported and connected to help.

Trusted people making everyday conversations matter.

NetCEP recognises that when people are struggling, they often open up to a familiar person, organisation or place before reaching out to formal support services, if at all. These everyday conversations can make a meaningful difference by offering a warm response, a listening ear and a connection to support when needed.

There are many people and places where connection naturally occurs, such as:

  • Community organisations
  • Small businesses
  • Sporting clubs
  • Libraries
  • Faith communities
  • Volunteer groups
  • Neighbourhood centres
  • Workplaces
  • Community leaders

NetCEP supports trusted people and places to strengthen their confidence and skills in recognising and responding to people experiencing distress, helping create a network of community touchpoints that provide a consistent, compassionate initial response.

In the Atherton Tablelands and Mareeba regions, these are known as Community Engagement Points. In the Ipswich and Somerset regions, they are known as Community Connectors.

While the language may differ, the purpose is the same: to strengthen the everyday moments where someone experiencing distress can be noticed, heard, responded to with care, and gently connected with further support if they want it.

Why Build a Network?

Every community has people and places that make everyday conversations happen. While each person or organisation can make a difference on their own, connecting them through a network strengthens the community's collective ability to support people experiencing distress.

Building a Network of Community Engagement Points is designed to complement existing community groups and services — not replace them. It supports a broader shift toward early, community-based responses to distress.

By building a network, we can:

  • Connect trusted people and places, reducing working in isolation and creating opportunities for shared learning and mutual support.
  • Build confidence and capability over time through ongoing learning, practical resources and peer connection.
  • Strengthen local pathways to support, helping trusted community members know where and how to connect someone with additional help when it is wanted.
  • Create more consistent and compassionate responses to distress, so people are more likely to encounter understanding and support wherever they turn.
  • Grow community capacity, making responding to distress a shared responsibility rather than something carried by a small number of individuals or services.
  • Regular check-ins with a local coordinator to talk through situations and build confidence
  • Skill-building to strengthen skills in responding to distress
  • Practical resources and tools for everyday use
  • Networking and peer connection with other Community Engagement Points in your region
  • Debriefing and coaching, as needed
